Indie Initiative – God of Word

God of Word Typing Game

Our initiative for indie game developers has given us the pleasure of working on some fantastically innovative games. As passionate gamers, it’s thrilling to see some of the unique and intriguing titles we’ve been able to help get off the ground, none more so than the incredibly addictive typing game – God of Word.

The premise is straightforward. Set in the world of Greek Mythology, and armed with little more than your vocabulary, you have to score enough points from the words you find in the jumble of letters to defeat the charging enemy.

At the end of each level is a typing challenge to test your speed and accuracy. It’s insanely addictive, and intensely nerve-wracking when you have to sacrifice precious time to refresh the letters.

‘As language lovers, we often curse the scarcity of word-based games on the market, so it was a real treat when God of Word arrived,’ says one of our French translators who worked on the project.

‘Our translation work focused on the menus, items names and descriptions, game modes and the achievements.

‘Given the Ancient Greek setting, there were many references to the mythology and gods in different elements of the game. This meant, as translators, we got to spend some time rediscovering these stories and comparing them to settle on the best interpretation of the names for the game.’

This level of attention to detail is what enables games to be as enjoyable in their target languages as the original source. Every time our localization teams work on a game, we strive to make the final result sound exactly as if the whole concept was conceived and delivered in that language.

One of the most enjoyable aspects of working in game localization is the opportunity for an exclusive look at a game before it hits the shelves and online stores. Whilst this is a vitally important part of the localization process – to check context, button sizes etc. – it’s also one of the most fun.

In a department of people who pride themselves on their linguistic expertise, things inevitably got rather competitive during the God of Word project, with high scores regularly being set, seen and broken.

God of Word has been extremely well received thus far and it’s easy to see why. The simplicity of the gameplay makes it perfect to just pick up and play. Indeed, it’s become a useful ‘mind-sharpener’ to get sleepy heads going in the morning across the office!

God of Word is available now on Steam, get it here.
